Chapter 5

Chapter 5
“Political subversion depends on a subversion of logic and language.” (http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/animalfarm/section5.rhtml)

1. What does this quote mean to you?
2. How, specifically, is this true in Chapter 5?
3. Can you think of any other example, either fictional or historical, of political subversion that depended on a subversion of logic and language? (If it helps any of you, I'm thinking Harry Potter).

1.) What this quote mean to me? It means that, "the overthrow/taking-over-of the government majorly depends on the overthrow/ridding-of the logic and language that the people now use."

2.) In Chapter 5, Napoleon uses the dogs that he raised in private to "overthrow" Snowball and expel him from the farm. Afterward, Napoleon uses Squealer's word and his dogs to stop any chance of any of the other animals on the farm voicing their own opinions about the current situation (and to stop any chance of him being overthrown himself). This shows the very process of the "subversion" of the current government (Snowball) and the logic and language of the people who reside under Napoleons new government rule (the other animals).

3.) I can't really think of any, no...Maybe the rising-to-power of Hitler or any of the other authoritarian figures in the past? (They also used the "subversion" of the logic and language that the people under them currently used to enforce their leadership, etc.).

  2. 1) It means the only way people can overthrow their government is to change the way they do things. It proves that they are able to function without the help of the current government system.
    2) I think Shane is on point with his explanation. Napoleon was most likely planning on using the dogs in his advantage since they were born and he took them into his possession. He groomed them to be his dogs and do what he tells them to do.
    3) I really don’t have any idea.

  3. I agree with Shane for the first question. This quote is very true to Animal Farm because for the pigs to become the new leaders they had to show the others that they were smarter than them.

  4. To me, and in relation to Chapter 5, this quote means that political dominance doesn't always mean the smartest, most logical, or most inventive politician. I think that it means which ever figure is better at presenting their ideas, "logic and language," if you will. In this chapter, Snowball and Napoleon are at odds with the windmill production. Snowball is advocating the production of it, and later in the chapter we learn that both pigs are actually for it, and it was Napoleon's idea in the first place. Snowball is "kicked off the island" because Napoleon just doesn't want Snowball in political opposition with him.

This quote means that the animals overthrow of their "government", or Mr. Jones, depends on their ability to overthrow the logic and language that the others use. I agree with Brittany W when she says that political dominance doesn't always mean the smartest. Whichever group is better at presenting their ideas, logic, and language are the ones who will succeed.

  6. I agreee how shane explains "Political subversion depends on a subversion of logic and language."

The use of overthrowing is when snowball was attacked by the puppies/dogs Napoleon trained and brainwashed. Napoleon uses the dogs as threats to make the animals not say anything about their opinion and everyone is afraid of the 9 dogs. Then, Napoleon would make them think about Jones comeing back makeing them not want tos ay anything.

I think when that plady that always wears pink would look nice to everyone and when she gets mad she uses the magical pen and the kids would get detetentions...then harry and his friends revolt by makeing their own magical room.

  7. 1. this quote ment that the only way that the people can overthrow their government is to change the way they do things. to prove that they can function without the current government. i also agree with Brittney W. when she says that political dominance doesn't always mean the smartest. The pigs are becoming the new leaders, but they need to prove that they can do it. They might not be the smartest but i still think they can do it if they work together.

  8. 1. I believe that this quote means that people involved in politics will use their words to twist the facts and reason to get what it is they want.

    2. Napoleon uses his dogs (that he brainwashed into his own little private army) to back him up in ostracizing Snowball. This is a great example of political subversion because he uses the dogs and Squealer to completely ostracize Snowball. The use of force and persuasion by exploiting the farm animal’s ignorance and naivety is how Napoleon uses subversion.

    3. I can’t think of any specific instances, but if you look throughout history, any authoritarian or dictator, has used subversion to get what they wanted in some way shape or form.

  9. 1.The way to overthrow a government is to use words and politics to voice your thoughts and manipulate others to think the way you want to think. One person or group must become dominent and even in that one group, one person will become all powerful. This person must supervise the public with force and fear to fully take over the government and keep control.
2.In chapter 5, Napolian uses the dogs that he had "educated" to overthrow Snowball. Then used force and his intelligence to exploit the true ignorance of the somewhat satisfied ad naivefarm animals to istill fear in them by telling them that Jones could come back. That is supervision.

  10. "Political subversion depends on a subversion of logic and language."

this quote means that the only way the animals are able to overthrow the government is to talk about your thoughts and speak out. I agree with brittany W about political dominance does not mean smartest which are pigs who are controlling the farm now. Taking away milk and apples and being smart does not sound good at all. Also, Napolean Brainwashed the little puppies and made them into an army. Even though many animals are not as smart as pigs but speaking their ideas, logic, and language are the ones who will succeed.
