Chapter 4

PROMPT: Answer one or both of the following questions (they overlap a bit):

1. How do the animals behave like humans in this chapter?

2. Discuss the importance of rituals for a society. Talk about rituals in the context of Animal Farm , chapter 4, and societies in general. You can also discuss examples of rituals from our society and what they do for us.

  1. In chapter 4 the main human characteristic is the war that Snowball commanded. He used human like tactics her read in a book to defeat the humans. These tactics included air raids, and ambushes. Sneak attacks are one thing humans are the best at and the animals used it against the humans. The animals also perform a burial service for the fallen “hero”. This burial Service is human like. The animals after the war came up with war decorations. These decorations, like humans, read “War hero, First class”.. The decoration given to the fallen sheep was “War Hero, Second Class”. In human history we have named our famous battles using a catchy name, such as D-Day. The animals use this characteristic and come up with a name for their battle, the “Battle of the Cowshed”. The animals last human characteristics is one like “Independence Day”, they fire off Mr. Jones’s gun, which was found after the fight, twice a year. Once on the Anniversary of the Battle of the Cowshed which is on October 12. The Second time is on Midsummer Day, the anniversary of the rebellion

  2. In chapter four the animals act very similar to the way humans do. The animals retaliate again the attack of Mr. Jones and his men. Snowball creates a flawless plan that drives out the humans and keeps animal farm free. The horse even feels bad about killing one of the humans and never wanted to harm anything just like most people are today. The animals also have a funeral ceremony for the fallen sheep in battle. They are like humans because the animals keep track of the history and the beginnings of animal farm. Society today shares the same rituals from funerals to its history and it is very important to everyone to help build up societies and learn moral values.

  3. I think that the main similarity the animals had to the humans in chapter four was the war. The way and the fact that they fought was human like. Their tactics of being sneaky and tricking the humans into the position that they wanted was exactly what a human war is like and you wouldn’t expect this from a pig. They were also very brutal. They had the same feelings that most humans do when they are at war. So I agree completely with what Tyler and Pat have said, but I would also like to add on other ways that they were human like. They also had a funeral for their dead sheep which was very human like. The animals were also spreading the word of their rebellion to other neighboring farms so that they could do the same. This I believe is human like and it reminds me of when people were trying to spread their beliefs to other people like in crusades, this is all human like characteristics.

  4. In Chapter four, the animals behave like humans by coming up with battle strategies. they also mourn the loss of their sheep friend and bury him and hold a funeral for him. animals dont do that kind of thing. They behave exactly like humans because they can think and talk like humans. if they couldnt talk they wouldnt be so organized. they also start some rituals and create ranks for themselves. they also comunicate with other farms and spread the word about rebelling and how its possible for other farms. this is exactly like humans because humans try to spread their beliefs to anyone and everyone they can. as the animals try becoming less like the humand they become more like the humans. one of the onl things hat seperates animals from humand is orginazation and now that the animals are experts at that they have no choice but to behave like humans.

The animals act as humans in many ways. The main way they act like humans is their battle tactics. Humans come up with a plan before fighting and so do the animals on the farms. Snowball has been studying books about Julius Cesar. He devises a plan for all of the animals to attack the men. The animals defeat the men extremely quickly and the animals only lose one sheep. They also bury the sheep which is something that humans would do if they were to lose a soldier. Another way the animals act like humans is that Boxer is sorry that he unintentionally killed a stable boy. At the same time, Snowball, shows a human quality by being vicious towards humans by saying ‘ the only good human is a dead human.’

In chapter four Snowball hears of a attack that will happen on the animals by the human. He shows human characteristics by reading up on war tactics to defeat the humans. Snowball takes what he learns and comes up with techniques and strategies that are used by humans in war. At the end of the fight the animals lost a sheep and perform a burial ritual extremely similar to human burial rituals. I agree with Chris that even though the animals are trying to become less humanlike and trying not to depend on humans, they are becoming more humanlike as time comes. The more Snowball and the other pigs study ways to become less dependent on the humans the more humanlike they are becoming.

  7. In chapter four, Mr. Jones and his neighboring farmhands plan to retaliate against the animals and take back over Manor Farm. The farmhands attack with sticks, but Mr. Jones attacks with a gun and ends up wounding Snowball in the skirmish. Snowball becomes like the general of the attack and has a complete plan for any tricks or attack methods that Mr. Jones and his men may have in store for them. In the battle a sheep is killed, Boxer knocks one of the farmhands out cold with a hoof to the head, and Snowball is wounded by Mr. Jones's gun. I totally agree with everyone else that the animals behave like humans because they come up with defense strategies and charges for the attack of Mr. Jones and his men. They also behave like humans because they hold a ritual burying for the death of the sheep that is killed in the battle. Snowball even says a few words in memory of the sheep and explains how the animals must be willing to die to defend Animal Farm. They also hand out medals for Boxer and Snowball for their outstanding effort and courage in the battle. These rituals are exactly like ones we have in our society today. We also hold ritual burials for foreign soldiers and award them for dying while defending their country. We also award soldiers today with awards like the medal of honor and the silver star for exceptional efforts and courageous that they perform in the heat of battle. They also use Mr. Jones gun to fire off two shots on the day they took over the farm and on the day they defended themselves against the attack of Mr. jones and his men. This is kind of like their own form of independence day and like a commemoration of a battle like we do in our society. Rituals are important in society because they recognize and show respect for outstanding things in history and show that people's efforts to defend their country will never be forgotten.

  8. The Animals become more and more like humans as we go through the book because now we know that some animals are becoming greedier, more intelligent, and more deceiving. The pigs who hate the humans most, are the most like the humans in this society. They are the ones who are learning the traits of humans and reading more and more now. The dumber animals I believe maintain their bestiality more then the other animals. The smarter animals seem to become more humanistic because they begin to fight and go against each other. The pigs convince some animals that the milk and apples are needed for their well being which is a lie. This shows them becoming greedy for a higher quality of life and not keeping everything “equal.” The animals though for the most part are still more like their animal selves. Most of them will become more and more human like with the learning of traits and teaching them to become able to read and write will only strength this.
